2017 trip

We are home with 1827 miles on the trip odometer. The tour of Southern Utah provided us with different vistas, each one better than the last.  The trip was unusual for us because it was so crazy busy. We had to make reservations in order to have a place to stay, especially on weekends. This did provide the benefit of staying in campgrounds we would otherwise have ignored. Kodocrome and Coral Pink Sand Dunes are two Utah State Parks well worth the extra 20 or so miles off the main track to reach them.  About midway through our trip we got word of wildfires and raging fire storms in Mendocino, Sonoma and Napa countries. We are subscribed to the Sheriff emergency Nixle alert system. There were mandatory evacuation orders, closing main highways and burning entire neighborhoods. There are friends who have lost everything.  We didn't go to Yosemite as planned because of smoke in the air. That combined with mid 20's at night discouraged us from coming home that way. There was heavy sm

Southern Utah

We stayed at Kodocrome State Park  for two nights and got an early start for Bryce Canyon. All the. Campsites were first come first serve...and we were able to snag one!  The Scenic Drive was worth the price of admission. The place was flooded with tourists and parking was hard to come by. Parked at the very end we hiked the Bristle Cone Trail. Along the way there were what looked like burn piles. I was able to confirm they were for fuels reduction to be burned in the winter when there is snow on t.he ground. The next day we headed south west through Red Canyon. I had made reservations at Coral Pink Sands SP for 3 nights.  It is an off road vehicle use Park. Considering that, it is really quiet here in the CG.  A short hike from our site is an observation platform overlooking the dunes. There was enough wind overnight to smooth out the tracks made the day before. We are here 2 more nights and we head to CA and Yosemite.  It has been warmer the farther south we go. Exploring Scenic byway 12

We left Green River having enjoyed breakfast and coffee prepared by an oxford trained barista. There was a bit of backtracking on hwy 24 before we turned onto 12. Grand staircase escalante Ntl monument is very different geography than the red rock canyons of  Moab and Canyonlands. The Hogsback was like driving on hwy 1, only both sides dropped off. All the photos I took really can't do it justice. Our timing was right for lunch at Hells Backbone Grill, which lived up to all the great reviews.   Tomorrow we explore Kodachrome and again by the time this posts we will be on down the road. There is  no cell service and John is happy generators are only allowed from noon to 4pm. --- De Williams http://followjoy.blogspot.com
