9/10-9/14 Taos and the High Road.

This past few days have been spent in and around Taos NM. I realized while we were in AZ that I had forgotten Zoë Too's monthly meds. We were encountering lots of mosquitoes so worried about heartworm. After contacting a couple of local vets, we decided to order online. Our Gualala Vet staff was great at getting the prescription okayed for the additional order. The local UPS store was available as a shipping address. Zoë got her meds, hopefully in time, 13 days late.

We stopped at the Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center on the way into Taos. Originally headed for a RV campground, we were told about CGs along the river for only $15 per night (with our federal senior discount $7.50). We have power and water and pay showers down the road. Even having to drive 13 miles into Taos, it is much less expensive for us. This morning a Ranger shows up and asked if we were here for "the walk." We ended up taking an interpretive hike.

Ranger Tom pointed out petroglyphs made by both native and Spanish. The native glyphs are difficult to interpret, while the Spanish one-Tito 1735-was pretty straightforward. Tom explained the Spanish herded sheep in this area about that time.

The Rio Grande Gorge is one of 5 "rift valleys" in the world. The continent is splitting apart here and there are 5 volcanic (forgot the word) in the areas. Tubes(?) without cones.

The entire area has been interesting to visit, both natural and man made. I walked around the area shops yesterday. At every turn was some amazing art. We have had some good nuevo mexican cuisine. Tamale plates, pesallo (hominy with pork), and sopapillas. Between Yelp and asking we have not been disappointed.

Today (Saturday) we are resting to head out tomorrow. Next stop Sumrall Mississippi via Oklahoma and Arkansas. John has a nephew there.

Onward, de and john
