9/4-9/9

This week we traveled 1332 miles, through 4 states and 100* heat. Our first night was spent in Dayton NV where the temperature got down into the mid 80s. Due to the temperature we decided to drive through Las Vegas after dark. We ended up in a scenic overlook at the Colorado River. John idled the van all night for the air conditioning. Day 3 started with breakfast in Kingman AZ where I bought my first t-shirt.

Over the next two days we travelled through an area featured by author Tony Hillerman. We have read all the novels featuring The Navajo policemen Lt Leaphorn and Sgt Chee. Our route followed BIA roads through the Navajo Reservation. We spent the night in the canyon de chelly national monument Cottonwoods Campground. We followed BIA roads through the monument. Amazing canyons and rock formations. Definitely worth the trip! I had been trying to route us through here for the last 2 Utah trips. I am glad we finally made it.

We have spent the last 3 nights in another Cottonwood CG, this one near Navajo Dam, along the San Juan River in New Mexico. Complete down time. No internet, limited cell reception.

Our next destination is Taos New Mexico. Hopefully it won't be as hot! John does not do well in heat. And we are headed to Florida! Ugh! The Maxi-fan is doing its job and allowing us to sleep at night. One more day of down time and we hit the road.

De and John.
